The Lucas Oil i-10 Speedway, presented by Next Era Energy Resources, will present round two of its 2013-2014 Winter Blast Racing Series this Saturday night, October 26th. The quarter mile paved oval is located at the Colorado River Fairgrounds in Blythe-California. The on track action will be provided by the speedway's Lucas Oil street stocks and NAPA Auto Parts factory stocks along with the pony stock division. Special guest division will be the Pick Your Part Southwest Tour Trucks. This three hours of affordable family fun is being presented by the locally owned and operated Subway Restaurant in Blythe.
The street stocks has been a major racing staple of the speedway's program for many years now. Their current points standings are based on the results of the September 28th season opener. That's the night that the Blythe based Almquist family, Steve, Clint and Kirk, ran one-two-three in the main event. The racing family goes into Saturday night's race a mere four points apart. Kyle Meyer and Jesse Lawson round out the top five in the standings, six and eight points respectively from the top.
The fan favorite, racing is rubbing, NAPA Auto Parts factory stocks will also be making their second appearance of the season this Saturday night. Local driver Ethan Miller is off to a good start towards defending his track championship after winning the season opener's main event. Series veterans John Lowrence, Richard Selph, Joe Van Dyke and Robert Spivey comprised the top five in the points with the quintet of drivers also being separated by eight points.
The high flying pony stock division will be making its official winter racing season debut this Saturday night with a 35 lap main event. Last year the pony stocks were an experimental division with a high anticipation level according to speedway promoter Greg Scheidecker who said "last year we liked the idea of including pony stocks into our program from the very beginning. Their high energy, side by side, racing style is perfect for the Lucas Oil i-10 Speedway. They will be visiting our speedway four times this year, including our huge Thanksgiving weekend show, and I truly believe we have the making of a highly successful program with them. It's my understanding that we have quite a few teams coming to Blythe this Saturday night. Many of these teams are towing their cars in from long distance southern California locations. That fact that they're willing to make that long trip to race their cars tells me a lot about these teams."
One of the major highlights to Saturday night will be a special guest appearance by the Pick Your Part Southwest Tour Trucks who will be treating the fans to a 50 lap main event. Now in their fourth season, this regional touring series has spent the 2013 season visiting multiple tracks in the southern California area. Saturday night will be the first of two appearances at Blythe during the winter racing season.
Neil Conrad has been the hot shoe of the series in 2013, with six feature wins, and holds a commanding lead of 47 points over feature winner Mike Gilboy and a 57 point advantage over two time winner Ed Cutler. However, the Blythe race is going to offer the team double points and that could become a major factor in the championship run. It's an excellent opportunity for Gilboy and Cutler to cut into Conrad's lead. Saturday night is the next to the last race of the season. The series will close their season at the Irwindale Events Center on November 2nd.
On Subway race night the spectator gates will open at 5pm with the green flag falling on the racing at 7pm. The evening will be preceded by the speedway's on track autograph and photo session allowing fans to meet the drivers while getting an up close and personal look at the race cars and trucks.
General admission tickets for Saturday night are $10 and $8 for seniors, age 55 plus, as well as military personnel and the handicapped. Teen tickets, age 13 to 17, are $5. Additionally Palo Verde High School students can received a one dollar discount on their tickets by presenting their ASB cards at the ticket gate. Kids tickets, age 6 to 12, are $3 while kids five and under are admitted free when accompanied by a paid adult. The speedway also offers a budget friendly family package for $20 which admits two adults and two kids age 17 and under.
